Fun With HP Printers

Posted by heymoe on October 19th, 2007

A friend of mine sent me a link last night to a small perl script that allows you to change the “Ready” message on HP Printers to a custom message of your choosing. Of course I had to try it when I got to work today so right now the two black and white printers in my office say “411 Y0ur B453 R B310n6 T0 U5” [info] or “Insufficient Funds Insert Coins” and our color printer, which has a 4 line display, now reports the local weather, updated every hour.

If you want to have some fun as well, check out the article [Click Here]. It should be noted that it is simple to restore the “Ready” message, all you need to do is power cycle the printer. Enjoy!

Walk in the Park

Posted by heymoe on October 14th, 2007

Well after I got my haircut I decided to take a side trip to Umstead Park before going grocery shopping. I wondered around the park for almost 2 hours and took some pictures since I had my camera with me. I think I walked around 2 miles around the park but the weather was great so it was all good.

N.C. State Fair

Posted by heymoe on October 12th, 2007

The N.C. State Fair starts today! I think I’m the only one in my group of friends that really wants / likes to go to the fair. Other then avoiding the fair grounds like the plague due to traffic unless you’re going to the fair, I don’t really have anything bad to say about it.

Moving On Up

Posted by heymoe on October 8th, 2007

Well, after working for the company for almost 9 year (hard to believe its been that long), I finally got an actual office with a door. I’m still in process of moving out of my cube but that is going to take awhile since I have several years of stuff to go through in there. I wonder how many years it will be until I get an office with a door and a window. hehe.

Space Shuttle, Top Gear Style

Posted by heymoe on October 8th, 2007

Those crazy guys at Top Gear decided to create a reusable space craft out of a Reliant Robin, a small three wheeled car and it actually took off. If you just want to see the launch, click HERE

In the February 18, 2007 episode of Top Gear, a Reliant Robin was used by Richard Hammond and James May in an attempt to modify a normal K-reg Robin into a reusable space shuttle.[1] Steve Holland, a professional radio-controlled aircraft pilot, helped Hammond to work out how to land a Robin safely. The craft achieved a successful launch, flew for several seconds into the air and managed to successfully jettison the solid fuel rocket boosters on time. This was the largest rocket launched by a non-government organisation in Europe. It used 6 x 40960 NS O hybrid rocket motors giving a maximum thrust of 8 metric tons. However the car failed to separate from the large external fuel tank due to a faulty alignment between the Robin and the external tank (10 thousandths of an inch out) and the Robin subsequently crashed and ‘seemed’ to explode into the ground soon after.

Movie Database

Posted by heymoe on October 1st, 2007

Well it looks like the software I was using to keep track of my movie collection was sold to another company recently. The new company released a new version of the software and to “help” people upgrade to the new version, they disabled the ability to add new movies using the older version. So I upgraded just to find out that the new company decided to stop offering a free and fully functional version that was banner ads supported and in its place they offered a fully functional version as long as you had 50 movies or less in your catalog. Being that I now have over 400 movies, the software has become useless to me now.

After searching for a replacement I found: Ant Movie Catalog. It currently does not allow the use of a bar-code scanner to add movies but it is free and seems to have a large community developing add-ons and what not for it. The best part is that it is able to import all my existing movies from my old software. Another nice feature is that it can export the data into many different formats including SQL.

So using the Ant Movie Catalog software + SQL export + an interactive web interface = My Movies. Click on it and check it out. I’m still fine tuning the DB and the page some but it is functional. Enjoy.
