Sunflower Project: The End

Posted by heymoe on 27th August 2007

Well while I was in Alaska the last sunflower bloomed and today, since the planets were looking pretty sad at this point, I cut off the remaining seed heads and chopped down the stalks. I now have 5 seed heads of different sizes hanging in my garage drying. It looks like I have more then enough seeds to plant next year. I’ll have to take a few pictures of the drying seed heads tomorrow and get them posted.

Well I now have two actual sunflowers now and the bees have been busy doing what bees do with flowers. I would have three but my tallest plant got knocked over during one of the storms early last weekend and when if fell over the flower head must have hit on my of deck chairs just right and got cut off 🙁 . So now I have a really tall, head less sunflower plant. The smallest plant on my deck has the flower head forming slowly but surely. One of the plants up by the mailbox is also forming a flower head while the other one, which is about half as tall, seems to be taking its time. I really wish I had a nice digital camera but looks like I’ll have to wait another month for that still.

We have a Sunflower!!! So far this is the only one that has fully opened. It looks like another one will be fully open in a few days. The tallest plant is taking it’s time and the smallest seems to have stalled. Both of the plants up by the mailbox are still just growing. Its so pretty. 😛 hehe

Update: Sunflowers 2007

Sunflowers 07-04-2007_0

It has been almost a month since my last sunflower update and a lot has happened since then. Three of the four plants on my deck have grown quite a bit since then. The tallest is now about 9 feet 3 inches tall the next tallest are around 7 feet 8 inches tall. The runt is still shorter then me and not all that healthy looking since it kept drinking up all its water before I could give it more. It also got blown over and broke its pot so I had to replant it into a bigger pot but I think it’s a little late for that. It’s interesting to note that the height of the plant seems to be related to the size of the pot it is in.

Any ways, all four of them are starting to form their flower heads now. One would think this is normal since I planted them all at the same time but the two plants I moved to my mailbox are still growing and no signs of any flower heads yet. They are still pretty short compared to the ones on the deck, the tallest being 6 feet 5 inches. I’m wishing I would decide on which camera to get and buy it so I can get some nice close ups / macro shots of the flower heads and the critters that I find on them. Oh well, I only have so much money to spend and I still need to finish up the family room.

Well with all the rain and sunshine we have been getting since the last update, the sunflowers have grown quite a bit. The tallest plant which was 2 feet 8 inches in my last update is now 5 feet 2 inches. Including the pot, it’s almost as tall as I am now. One of the plants next to the mailbox is now as tall as the mailbox (About 4 feet). I’ve noticed that even though there are no flowers yet, the plants seem to attract ants and other bugs. As far as I can tell they don’t seem to be hurting the plants so I let them be. I wish I had a better camera so I could take some good closeups of the critters but I’m not done with my research yet. I will tell you one thing for sure, they drink a lot of water. I was watering them every other day until I can home and found them very droopy. They perked up quickly though after a good drink so now I water them everyday.

Silly Sunflowers

Posted by heymoe on 4th June 2007

Well it pretty much rained all day Sunday, which was nice since we really needed the rain but it looks like the added weight of the rain on the leaves of three of my sunflower plants was more then their stalks could handle and they bent right over on their sides. I was able to get those standing up right again by using some support and today when I got home I was able to remove the supports and everything is back to normal. My biggest plant stood strong and did not have any problems while it was raining but to my surprise, when I got home, it was bent over so now it has supports. Silly sunflowers, make up your mind. No pictures for this update but will have some soon.

Here are some updated pictures of my sunflower plants on this Hot and Sunny Memorial Day. As you can see the four plants that are in pots on my deck are doing well. Even though I planted all of the seeds at the same time, they are not all growing at the same rate. The tallest one stands at around 2 feet 8 inches right now while the smallest one is about 1 foot 2 inches. The leaves on the tallest plant are bigger then my hands as you can see. I kind of wish the front of my house got more direct light in the day so I could move some of the potted plants along the steps to my front door. Oh well, I wonder what my neighbors would do if I planted a whole row of them outlining my front yard and driveway.. hehe. The plants that are next to my mailbox are coming long just fine. They are between 1 foot 8 incudes and 2 feet. Overall the projects is working out great. It’s amazing how quickly they are growing but they still have a long way to go to reach their full height of 12 feet or so.

Sunflower Transplant: Part 2

Posted by heymoe on 18th May 2007

Sunflowers 05-17-2007_0

The last two plants have been transplanted into their own pot today. The runt of the litter was placed into one of my smaller pots so I might have to move it yet again down the road. Time will tell.

Sunflowers 05-17-2007_4

The two plants I moved to my front yard next to my mailbox look like they are going to make it. They did not look to well the first two days after their transplant but they are looking good now. They don’t even need support anymore. More Pictures

Sunflower Transplant: Part 1

Posted by heymoe on 13th May 2007

Sunflowers 05-13-2007_1

Well I transplanted three of the plants out of the big pot late yesterday. I moved one into its own pot and the other two I plated behind my mailbox. I still need to move the two smaller plants from the main pot but will wait for them to get a little bigger. Hopefully they will start growing a little fast now that they don’t have to compete for the sun light as much as before.

Sunflowers 05-13-2007_5

The one I moved to it own pot looks like it is doing well after almost 24 hours in its new home. I removed the two support sticks after I took the picture. Hopefully It will be able to stand up straight on it own now.

Sadly, the two I move to my mailbox are not looking all that happy right now. One does look better then the other but they both are not as happy as they were before the transplant. I’ve added some support sticks to both of them to keep them upright and off the ground. Hopefully one or both of them will pull though. If not I guess I know where the other two plants I still need to transplant will be going. I really want to have some big sunflowers next to the mailbox. More Pictures

Took some updated pictures of my sunflower plants this morning. They have gotten pretty big compared to the pictures from 5/2/2007. They are starting to crowd each other in the pot so I really need to get them transplanted soon. So many things to do and so little time.. Sigh…
