Storm Leak: v4.7.0.85

Posted by heymoe on 27th December 2008

I was able to talk my company into upgrading my old Blackberry 8703e to the new Blackberry Storm a few weeks ago. The days leading up to its arrival I spent a lot of time reading the forums over at CrackBerry.com to see what I could learn about the new Storm, tips-n-tricks, hacks, etc..

When the day finally arrived I spent pretty much the whole day playing and trying out some of the things I learned from the forums. All was well until I started to play around with customizing my ring-tones. I went to make a change with one of the pull-downs when the Storm locked up. So I pulled the battery to reboot it. When it loaded the home screen it was locked up again and rebooted on its own again. So in less then 24 hours I some how managed to kill my first Storm by customizing my ring-tones. Yeah!

The next morning I stopped by the Verizon store and luckily they had some in stock. The customer service guy said they just received a new batch and this was the first day they still had some in stock. Once I got to work I was able to quickly get the new unit up and running.

The official version of code that Verizon support is currently v4.7.0.75 which was a big improvements over the version of code that the Storm first shipped with but it still has a lot of problems and bugs. I found out one the forums that there was a leaked version of newer code (v4.7.0.83) so I decided to test it out. Even though I only used v4.7.0.75 for a day or so, I was able to notice improvements in the speed / responsiveness of the device as well a fixes for some bugs I noticed with the Media Player. One of the bigger improvement was with battery life. Before the upgrade I had to recharge the Storm after about 20 hours of usage. After the upgrade the Storm lasted just about 3 full days before I had to change it again.

Any ways, even though I persoanlly wasn’t running into any major problems with v4.7.0.83, a lot of other people on the forums were so when news of another leaked version hit the forums last Thursday, people were couldn’t wait to get their hands on it.

So after waiting two days, v4.7.0.85 has finally been publicly leaked. It took me about 20 mins to Backup, Wipe, Install the OS and Restore my backup. So now I’m running v4.7.0.85 and so far I haven’t really found any differences between v4.0.7.83 and v4.7.0.85. For anyone else wanting to take v4.7.0.85 for a spin here are some links where you can download it. Enjoy!

Work Layoffs

Posted by heymoe on 5th December 2008

You're Fired!

There nothing like going back to work after a long holiday weekend just to have the company down-size / let go / RIF / ax / etc.. 10 of your fellow colleagues.

I knew something was wrong when I got to the office and saw one of my co-workers outside crying on the steps. Once inside the office I was told there was a all-hands meeting and needed to go to a conference room. Others in the conference room were chatting away like we normally do while waiting for a meeting to start and no one seemed to know what the meeting was about. I went back to my desk to setup my laptop as the co-worker who I saw crying outside walked by and made a comment to me that I thought was a little weird at the time related to a request they made yesterday. Walking to the break room to get a drink I noticed that a lot of managers had their doors shut talking with co-workers one-on-one. Leaving the break room I was blocked from taking the long way back to the conference room by another manager and was told to go directly back to the conference room.

Back in he conference room I started to put two and two together and realized that the company was laying people off. It wasn’t until several minutes later that the President of the company walked into the conference room to announce to everyone officially that the company was laying off 8 employees and 2 contractors.

This caught a lot of people by surprise especially since the company down played the effects of the current economic crisis on the company and made it sounds like there was no need to worry about anyone losing their job in a previous meeting we had a few weeks back.

A co-worker asked why the company spent a lot of time recently to hire on a lot of management and higher positions (Chiefs) just to let go 10 non-management positions (Indians) which left some of these Chiefs without people to manage. As to be expected we all got a nice horse and pony show / magic hands / tap-dance type answer to justify letting go the 10 people who do a lot of day to day work so that the managers will be around if the company should need to use them for possible future management needs like maybe buying companies that are falling on hard times due to the economic crisis.

In the end two co-workers in my group got let go and the whole ordeal pretty much left the whole company in a state of very low morale.

Vacation Time

Posted by heymoe on 21st September 2008

Vacation Time

I’ve worked for that same company for almost 10 years and over the years I’ve accumulated a lot of vacation time that has rolled over each year. So earlier this year the company implemented a new rollover policy which will allow an employee to rollover 30 days of vacation time into 2009 and then 2 weeks each year after. Well by the end of the year I will have accumulated 72 days of vacation so that means I need to use 42 of those days before the end of the year. Yeah, I know.. Poor me.. I’m sure a lot of people would like to has this problem.

Any ways, I really hate to have to be out of the office for over half of the work days left in the year but the company is currently leaving me no other option. They are basically telling me I can use them or loose. I’m not saying I’m without fault on this either. I knew I could only carry over 30 days into next year but never got around to taking any time. Oh well. Now I need to figure out what I’m going to do with all this free time for the rest of the year. Yeah, Yeah, poor me again.. hehe

The Lafayette Report

Posted by heymoe on 7th September 2008

Well, my trip to Lafayette, LA. was not canceled after all so I flew down there last Thursday. Total travel time including the almost 2 hour layover in Houston, TX. was ~7 hours. Both legs of my trip down there were on the small, 50 seat (1 x 2 seat configuration) Embraer RJ145 jets which really sucks to fly on if you’re taller then around 5’3″ which included me and the NCSU Women’s Volleyball Team that was on the flight with me to Houston.

Any ways, I arrived in Lafayette around 1:30pm and while waiting for my baggage I tried to find a hotel room using the airport kiosk without success. After that I got my rental car and headed to the job site. The drive there was pretty easy and over all the damage from Gustav looked to be pretty minimal on the outside but I’m sure places were still without power and unseen water damage. I didn’t really get much work done on Thursday since the other vendor that was there was still getting the SAN storage and servers they were responsible for up and running so I started to do some research on the blade hardware the company was using and how the networking in the blade chassis worked as well as learn more about how the existing network was setup and how our setup will fit into it.

Around 6pm I decided to try and find a hotel again and this time I got lucky got a room at a local Hilton that had some last minute cancellations. Leaving the customer site around 9pm I headed to the hotel looking forward to some quite relaxation time since I’ve been on the move since 6am. Entering the room I was greeted by the sound of two carpet drying fans and a dehumidifier. When I left to grab some dinner I checked with the front desk to see if I could turn them off but they requested that they be left on so the room could dry out without damage. So being a nice guy I left them running all night which pretty much ruled out any quite time.

Friday was pretty much non-stop 17 hour work day. I didn’t even get a chance to have lunch or dinner and by time I left for the day at 2am, there were no places open to grab some food. I pretty much lived on a cold sausage biscuit that one of the guys had left over in the morning, hand fulls of Coco Puff and some peanut butter on crackers. Saturday I spent about 3 hours tying up some loose ends which left me with about 2 hours to do some site seeing before heading home. I was hopping there would be time for me to take a side trip to see the French Quarter but no such luck.

My flight back was actually more enjoyable since both legs of my trip back were on bigger planes. I arrived back in Raleigh around 11pm and this time was able to enjoy a quite (IE: without fan noise), relaxing evening.

Travel: Lafayette LA.

Posted by heymoe on 1st September 2008

You Are Here

Humm.. My company is working on a project for another company located in Lafayette LA.. I’m scheduled to fly out there on Thursday to get the hardware out there configured and placed on network so we can remotely finish the install from Raleigh. Normally I’m all for traveling for the company. In the past it has provided me with opportunities to visit places like Guam, Adak Island, Japan, Hong Kong and Anchorage which I would most likely not visit until sometime in the future (IE: Retirement). So traveling to Lafayette would be yet another opportunity to visit a place I’ve never been before and depending on how fast I get the gear up and running, I could take a side trip to New Orleans and see the French Quarter.

Well that sounds all good and everything but there is a monkey wrench to this plan and its name is Gustav. I’ll find out tomorrow if I get the green light or not. If it is a go, hopefully I’ll be able to book a hotel, car and airline ticket still. I called around on Friday and every hotel within a 50 mile radius of Lafayette was booked. I’m really hoping the trip gets called off and pushed back at least two weeks since I got things to do next week. Here is crossing my fingers.

Note: The “X” in the image is roughly where I will be going.

Happy Soggy 4th of July

Posted by heymoe on 5th July 2008

Well so far the only fireworks I’ve seen this 4th of July weekend are from Mother Nature. I headed down to the Raleigh fairgrounds in hopes of setting up the camera and make attempts at capturing the fireworks action but that pretty much failed more or less from the beginning.

I knew going down to the fairgrounds was going to be a mess with traffic and cars everywhere so figured I would take the motorcycle out so I can easily find a parking space up close. I check the weather about an hour before heading out and everything looked good then but I should have checked it before I left. A little over halfway to the fairgrounds it started to sprinkle and I could see lighting in the distance. When I was almost to the fairgrounds, maybe two exits away, I hit traffic and the rain was really coming down. At this point I figured the fireworks were canceled so I worked my way out of the traffic and stopped by a bar for a drink near the apartment I used to live in during college. I figured I would hold up in the bar until the rain stopped.

As luck would have it, shortly after getting my drink I got a call from the security company for my work informing me that the alarm was triggered. We being the good employee I am I figured I should head to the office, which was on the way home any ways, and make sure everything was OK. So I finished my drink which by that time the rain looked like it died down to a sprinkle again and head out. Once on the road again Mother Nature figured I was not wet enough and sent a tropical down pour my way. Of course when the down pour hit everyone on the road turned stupid and started to flash their emergency lights but instead of moving into the right lanes so other people who know how to drive in the rain could get by, they just formed a line across all lanes pacing each other blocking in everyone behind them. GRRrrrr.. I hate stupid drivers.

By time I got to the office I was soaked to the bone. My shoes were full of water and my leather motorcycle jacket must have weighted another 10 pounds. Luckily my camera and lens were still nice and dry in my backpack.

After spending about 30 minutes at the office verifying everything was secure (It looked like it was a false alarm), I got on the motorcycle and headed home. At this points I was looking forward to getting out of my wet cloths and relax to a movie or something. Well that plan pretty much we out the door as I turned into my neighborhood. The storm that I’ve been fighting my way through pretty much since I left the house knocked out power to my whole neighborhood. So after everything I’ve gone though just to see some fireworks, my 4th of July ended in the dark.

Any ways, the fairgrounds fireworks were rescheduled to the 5th and this time I’m just staying home. As of right now it looks like it was a good decision since it has been raining pretty much all evening. Actually, checking the local news site it looks like the fireworks at the fairground did go off tonight but they started an hour early so I would have missed them any ways. Oh well. Maybe next year I’ll get to try and photography fireworks. Yeah!

Fun With HP Printers

Posted by heymoe on 19th October 2007

A friend of mine sent me a link last night to a small perl script that allows you to change the “Ready” message on HP Printers to a custom message of your choosing. Of course I had to try it when I got to work today so right now the two black and white printers in my office say “411 Y0ur B453 R B310n6 T0 U5” [info] or “Insufficient Funds Insert Coins” and our color printer, which has a 4 line display, now reports the local weather, updated every hour.

If you want to have some fun as well, check out the article [Click Here]. It should be noted that it is simple to restore the “Ready” message, all you need to do is power cycle the printer. Enjoy!

Moving On Up

Posted by heymoe on 8th October 2007

Well, after working for the company for almost 9 year (hard to believe its been that long), I finally got an actual office with a door. I’m still in process of moving out of my cube but that is going to take awhile since I have several years of stuff to go through in there. I wonder how many years it will be until I get an office with a door and a window. hehe.

Bad Work Day…

Posted by heymoe on 10th September 2007

Well going into work today I knew that one of my co-worker’s father pass away after a long fighting with cancer but as he reported: “We consider it a blessing that he is no longer in pain and suffering.”. Another guy at the office had battery acid leak all over the inside of this new car and was going to take care of that Monday morning. I, of course, had my own car issues to take care of this morning but we are just starting.

More bad news came about shortly after I got to work. One of my co-workers passed away in a house fire sometime this past weekend. From the information we have been told my co-worker re-entered the burning home with her boyfriend to rescue the boyfriend’s son after they were able to get my co-worker’s daughters out. My co-worker, the boyfriend and the boyfriend’s son did not make it out. My deepest sympathy goes out to their family and loved ones after such a tragic event.

This of course made for a very somber work environment today.
